bipolar blues

The second poem in “Afro Blues”, also untitled in the book, was written after Floyd had fallen into a marijuana depression. The only thing that he could think of was that he was putting his beloved Anna in danger. The Shifta, bands of rebels and belligerent thieves, could attack them at any time. Yet he was with her in the desert he loved, the Sahara. Thus his poem illustrates the paradox of beauty (the desert) and of violence and hate. There was so much beauty and so much pain – in one world.

The references to Eric & Ray refer to two of his favourite musicians Eric Clapton and Ray Charles.

Bipolar Blues

There ain’t no race,
Slow down the Goddam pace.
Ain’t got no shoes
To win ‘gainst these blues.
I see hunger and pain.
See sand no rain.
Hieroglyphics and scarabs,
Slave takin’ Arabs.
Arabs on the mat
Devout as that.
They are not evil,
No fucking Boll Weevil.
They sing, they’re proud.
For crying out loud
Why is life such a paradox?
There’s Anna, there’s pox.
There’s rift valleys
And New York alleys.
There’s Eric, and there’s Ray,
And children that have to pay.
As the Sahel goes away
Day after day.
Allah is God,
Earth and sod.
Catholics stand fast
And up blows Belfast.
Buddha reclines
As Zen defines
Samurai swords
And warring lords.
Religion and love
What this world made of?
I love this earth
Beauty round and round its girth.
Canyon’s Grand,
Promised Land,
Nile Delta,
Himalayan Helter-skelter.
Egyptian Vulture,
Maya Culture.
Yet there are rats that shoot the poor,
Bastards that stone the whore.
Politicians that feed off the weak
Business that only peak
When labour is cheap
And profits all heap.
World, you’re a bundle of shit.
And we’re all under it.
