What more can I say, tears welled up in my eyes as I read this out during their wedding reception.
Togetherness
He does exist, always has done. Yet, although he is the only one ever, of his kind, he would not ever have existed at all; not without her, for they complement each other, and without them both there would be no legend.
It was he, the one of fine character, whose strength, it was said, cut through the black of night like a silver sword, and gave hope in the darkness. But he was never seen, and as the legend stretched through the minds of generations, over eons, and into the present, he was said to be white, shaped like, and with the strength of a horse, and with a unique horn extending out above his nose. That is what they say, but no one has ever seen the unicorn.
Nor would this sovereign, silver stallion have ever developed in the mind of man without the knowledge that she too existed. For it is not enough to know that there is a silver shaft of hope that will get you through the darkness of night, there must also be the promise of a bright and happy life during the day.
And so it was that the Unicorn trudged along through his early life, head down, concentrating on the narrow path ahead of him, and not quite knowing where it would lead nor what he would find on the way. He developed such an immense but gentle strength as he made his way. Always making progress, never stepping out of line, nor straying from the path, and always considerate of others on the way. Not knowing what, or even if, something special would cross his path.
Then, one day, he found his way, as if by chance, yet it was his destiny, to the brow of a hill, from which he could only stop and look down, at the amazing valley below. There could have been the seven wonders of the world in all other compass directions and still he would have looked down into that wondrous valley. There was nothing else so beautiful. Nothing else that could captivate his attention…
It was a wide, open valley: A gentle, sloping spring meadow ran down from the hill on which the Unicorn stood, into a long, fertile vale which led up to an equally gentle slope of green and on to the magnificent background of rocky cliffs that stood up proud, thousands of meters high into the rich, blue sky.
What was so incredible about this valley was that apart from the lush green slopes and the majestic rocks behind there was nothing there except one bright, and beautiful, flower. It was her, and he knew it.
One small, wonderful flower, that emanated, from her most amazingly glorious, silk like petals a golden light that actually is the sole reason that the sun ever did shine. For she invented sunshine, it beamed out from her beauty up into the sky and she was the original cause of daylight.
The hope of the night, looked down into the valley of daylight and although only one flower adorned that huge valley it seemed that the whole valley floor was ablaze with her golden sunshine.
She too, had pushed from below, with her head down. Always on her way up, her sunbeam eminence, although partly hidden, and not quite fully developed, was always apparent and had given pleasure to everything around her as she grew into the wonderful golden flower that she was deemed to be.
It was only then, as the flower began to fully open and throw the very first, original sunbeams up into the sky, did the birds in the trees on the edge of the valley learn to sing, and the first ever spring was born. The sparrow chirped with glee, the chiff chaff whistled back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, to tell everyone about this golden sunshine that came from the flower. The robin’s breast swelled up and went bright red as he sung the oracle to the world, and the woodpecker began his laughter of joy. This was all the result of the one flower in bloom.
Not one creature could have walked past without stopping for a while, but it was the Unicorn who stood above her as she began to blossom in full, and he knew, from that moment on, that he was destined never to exist as one, never to be seen again as one, his existence will live on only as a legend. This too, is why few people know of the one mythical flower, that filled an entire valley with sunshine and daylight.
From that moment on they were one. But the only way for two so very different beings to be together was to melt into one, to twine into togetherness and into eternity. Together they give us the warmth and light of day, and the silver beams of hope in the night. They are one and we are happy…
The Unicorn and the flower are legends, or are they? Are they not Christoph and Nicola, oh yes they are. But our children are mere mortals, they love each other as one, and they have the strength and beauty to remain one, yet both will shine through that one-ness and will remain the true individuals they are. Each obtaining their individual aims and desires yet maintaining the one-ness that has brought them together.
The Unicorn and the Flower began and there are no two people better fitting than Nicola and Christoph to complete the journey, to turn a legend into a wonderful life together.
